Food and spices are taken in consideration as medicinal substance by ayurveda. Therefore always eat which is fresh and organic as possible and, if available, locally grown is very beneficial. Therefore the concept of shad rasa (six taste) is a central point in Ayurvedic cooking these taste includes sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent— and it is important that these taste should be present in balanced proportions. According to Ayurveda eating food at the appropriate times of the day and in accordance with the body’s natural rhythm is good for maintaining good health. The most considerable meal is best which is eaten between 10 a.m. and noon. Though it is very hard but one should at least try to eat bigger meal in the day time and should eat small meal at night and that prior to 8 p.m. it’s so that what you eat should digest before going to sleep. According to Ayurveda eating at odd hours can create number of health problems.
It is very important to have at least 5-6 hours of break between each meal for complete digestion. On the other hand individual who have strong digestion and raging appetite can have a light snack, such as fruit, juice or nuts, between meals as it helps in maintaining body energy. As by doing this individual feel strong and healthy.
According to ayurveda a fruit digest faster than grains’ therefore eating both at same time usually puzzles the digestive process and creates fermentation and ama. When a food that digests easily and quickly such as fruit usually stick around in the stomach while other, heavier foods such as grains and carbohydrates finish their therefore a mixed message usually disrupts the agni digestive fire. Foods that have a mostly acid quality, or fermented foods such as yogurt, should be avoided eating with sweet foods such as milk or fruit. As sour quality of food can cause the milk to split and ferment in the stomach leading to toxic buildup in the GI tract and the deeper tissues over time. This can cause bad effect on your stomach and lead to health problem.
Keep one thing in mind that drinking lot of water during eating can wash away the digestive enzymes due to this it can decline the digestive fire (agni). Therefore by sipping on a half cup of water while eating benefits the break down of food and helps the digestive process. Therefore avoid drinking lot of water at the time of eating.
